HISTORY

Stará Ľubovňa is one of Slovakia’s royal cities. The first indirect mention of this picturesque town dates back to 1235. Stará Ľubovňa is located on the border between Poland and Slovakia and for centuries the city was influenced by both countries. For a long 360 years Stará Ľubovňa was a part of a pledge made to the Krakow Voivodeship in the Kingdom of Poland. The culture and traditions of both countries have been preserved for this very reason and the city developed into important center at the crossroads of major trade routes of the day.

1364 WAS AN IMPORTANT YEAR FOR STARÁ ĽUBOVŇA AS IT WAS DECLARED A ROYAL TOWN WITH CITY PRIVILEGES WITH THE ALCOHOL LICENSING INCLUDED IN SUCH PRIVILEGES. THERE WAS NO DOUBT THAT THE PRODUCTION OF SPIRITS IN THE CITY WOULD FLOURISH FOR CENTURIES. FURTHER EVIDENCE OF THIS IS THE OLDEST PRESERVED DISTILLERY LOCATED BENEATH ĽUBOVŇA CASTLE.
